Our Critics and Nay-sayers

Posted on 2012-03-21 12:57:02

We have had our share of critics. A particular patient who came into us stated after watching our video of the Impulse iQ, that he doesn't believe in such "hocus pocus." He gave it a try anyway because he said, he had "tried everything else". He still said the same thing about the chiropractic instrument Dr. Milnes uses when he surprisingly showed up to his next appointment.  He now states he kept coming back in to prove that he was right, but really I think he enjoyed entertaining Jessyca and I with his remarks. We continued to educate him and honestly, I didn't think we'd see him the next week. He showed up and graciously admitted that he was feeling different. After a couple of months of following his individualized care plan, he has now graduated to our Wellness Program :)

No one has been a bigger skeptic than myself. I grew up in a family that despised chiropractic. Though I was never adjusted, I remember my brother going for a week, then I overheard dinner conversations about how chiropractors were not real doctors. They "fixed" you so that you had to keep going back, along with other myths I have heard throughout my years. I knew Dr. Milnes personally but had not received chiropractic treatment, as the thoughts I grew up with lingered in my mind. After my auto accident I complained to him of my lower back aching so badly that sometimes it hurt to walk. As a part-time dance instructor at the time, it was debilitating and frustrating to not have the movement I had been used to. Dr. Milnes said to give it a try.

To be honest, the first visit was exhausting and the results only matched my expectations. But Dr. Milnes encouraged me to hang in there, because each adjustment builds on the next. Some visits I would step off the curb in such pain and slowly walk to my car tearfully. I made sure to follow my care plan, which included icing, and home care although I really wanted to give up.

During one visit, I stated that my knee was swollen and in pain, an ongoing issue I had from landing from leaps harshly during my dancing. I had even been to an orthopedist who informed me that I would need knee surgery. I put that on hold, as well as my dancing for quite some time.  Dr. Milnes adjusted my knee and within three days the pain and swelling completely disappeared. I immediately thought that if I had insurance at the time I saw the orthopedist, I would have probably gotten surgery!

The issues in my lower back resolved within a few months and I am back to normal activities, only needing an adjustment about once a month to maintain a healthy aligned spine. Dr. Milnes uses the Impulse iQ to "fix" the issues I have in my pelvic region due to curling up like a cat on the sofa, something I know very well NOT to do.

It is unfortunate that many times the way we meet our patients is because they are in pain. Many times they are not in the most gracious mood because they are feeling what I remember feeling after my accident. I am able to empathize many times. I know they are in good hands with Dr. Milnes. He is honest and informative, if he is not seeing progress, he always discusses other options. It is an awesome feeling to see our patients go from a 5 or higher on a pain scale, then graduate to PRN or Wellness status. Our goal is to help you achieve your optimum potential and improve your quality of life!

New Year, New Habits!

Posted on 2012-01-06 07:51:34

Let's kick off the new year by getting rid of bad habits. Try practicing healthier habits for 30 consecutive days. Get a calendar and mark off each day, rewarding yourself as you do.  Here are some new habits that you can try...

  • Take a walk.  Grab your camera, or new mp3 player and get walking. Take pictures of the nature that surrounds you or listen to some relaxing music. The sun, music, and beauty are all great for you!
  • Take small steps. Replace one meal with a healthy salad, a protien shake, some almonds and fruit. Then replace two meals...
  • Watch your favorite show on a gymnic ball. Do crunches or stretches while watching. Many times you won't even notice your exercising!
  • Change up your style. New haircut, new bedroom comforter...change is often good. It is scary at first but then you are feeling brand new!
  • Take time for YOU! Often times, we are consumed with work, kids, errands, etc. We all need and deserve some time to ourself to enjoy what we like.

Let us know what new healthy habits you have begun. We hope you all have a wonderful start to a fabulous year!
